View Full Version : Does this sound like a sticking solenoid or worse?

I just started with a problem, when I put the truck in reverse there is a 2-3 second delay before I feel anything happen. When it goes into gear there is a slight thump then a brief pause then another thump, then reverse as normal. On the road, the truck drives like normal.
Slowing down for a stop light feels weird like something is still pushing the truck, I get another two thumps as I come to a complete stop, then the truck is normal. Drive away from the stoplight and the truck is fine.
This just started and happens only when slowing down to make a stop or going into reverse.
I had the reverse planetary recall done a while ago and at the same time the shift solenoids were changed, does this sound like a sticking solenoid or something bigger?

Will it do it in stock mode Pete?

that was one of my 04 trucks symptoms among many others. it fixed itself when i flushed all the metal shavings out a replaced with new fluid...

Stock or tuned, makes no difference.
Once I noticed things were acting funny I switched to a different tune and got some massive shift flare.
No shift flare with stock programming but the clunking is definately there

Sounds like a sticking solenoid. Does it go away after a few times when you take it back to stock?

No, I have about 100 miles of stock driving since Friday and it is getting progressively worse.
The delayed engagement does not happen every time, but I'm noticing that when it happens the delay is a bit longer and the engagement is a bit harder.
One time today as I was leaving a stop light it was taking off in second gear(?), after I got moving the truck downshifted as took off as normal.
I am going to call the dealer after the holiday, I'm just hoping to put some miles on it first.
Are all of these glitches throwing any kind of code? Can I have a code even with no warning lights?
Can my XCal read the transmission codes? If so, I will check them and let you know what they are

Thanks for your help Doug

Your Sct will read any codes that are present...

That's what I figured thanks

I checked today....No codes found

What did they do when they did the reverse planet recall? If I remember correctly at first they were rebuilding them if the damage wasn't bad. However the new part was the same part number as the old planet set. Then they would grab another 04 trans. Since it was still an 04 trans it was not going to fix it. They they would use a 2005 trans and update the processor or else the Wrench light would come on.

You wouldn't get a code unless there was an electrical problem. Mechanically stuck would be one, but electrical faults usually kick codes. Then again if it went into default and set the pressure to KILL it would flash the tow/haul light to let you know it was in self destruct mode.

I don't know what they did for the recall. I had no issues prior to having the recall work done, but once they got it back together they told me they found a sticking solenoid on the test drive so they took it apart again.
I wondered how a solenoid could go bad when it's sitting on the bench, but since it was a recall job I did not bother to ask questions.
I will pop the stock intake back on this weekend and call the dealer on Monday.

Nummit,
My truck was doing the exact same thing, only a little worse, and shifting into any gear.

Pull the pan and drain the fluid, put a few bolts back in the pan and start engine and drain again. Do this a couple times, it will drain the T/C.
Change the filter then fill back up, appx 17 qts of trans fluid. Add some Trans X.
Mine does not do anything wrong after i did this. I think it is def. a solenoid, but this will make it unstick at least it did on mine.

I would do that if I had no warranty, but I still have some warranty so I will let ford buy the $4.00qt fluid this time.

Little bits of metal get into the pressure contol solenoid and will put the pressure rediculously high. Since it has popped many techs gauges that ONLY go to 300psi, I wouldn't recommend testing the pressure manually. Once the pressure goes this high and stays there, the trans goes into self destruct.
