funny story about mikeys tranny...

well, i dropped my truck off yesterday to swap my 4.56s out for 4.88s, preparing for some bigger tires. i go to pick the truck up today at lunch, he takes it for a test drive, and :eek: POW :eek: , something blew up. the rear differential exploded. come to find out, when the rear end exploded, it seized up; skidding the tires to a stop and obviously locking the driveshaft. well, the tranny said :upyours: to the locked driveshaft, and now the truck will hardly move under its own power. we got it back to the shop, tore the rear diff down, and simply couldnt figure out why it exploded. upon further inspection, it turns out our distributor (4wheel parts wholesale), sent a pinion bearing for a 10.25" rear, not a 10.50". the 2 rear ends' parts are interchangeable; everything installed fine, but the 10.5" bearing is a little bigger. so the 4.56s went back in, and now im so traumatized, i dont even know if i want 41s anymore :mad: . we dropped the tranny pan, and of course, full of metal CHUNKS, not flakes. SOOO.... tranny gets tore apart tomorrow morning, and hopefully will be rebuildable, and ill have it back tomorrow or friday. if not, a suncoast is our next option :D , and free to me i might add! id hate to see what overnight will cost on a full trans :eek: , because i gotta have the truck on the farm this weekend...

how are you going to get a suncoast tranny for free? who installed your gears for you? their fuck up i guess for puttin em in and not being right? what kinda mileage you gettin now bout 11? and below 10 with those wheels and tires?? i had a v10 before this truck and had lift, 4:56 with 35s and got about 10 mph at 70. before the tires and gears, i had it up to 14.5 mph!

so the rules are all compromised when it comes to diesels huh? haha. i thought bigger gears meant more torque, less mileage! i thought about switchin my 3:73s for 4:10 to gain a lil torque, but my mileage would probably go down, i do a lot of 70-75 mph traveling...

there is a tradeoff to an extent. taller gears give better city driving, short gears are better for highway. however, if you go too short you will hurt all around.

EXACTLY the same with my 4.56's and 38's. My wife's little mini-Hummer, 14 highway... and my pop-in-law is always wondering why we take the truck on road trips..... He acts like he likes it but secretly I think he thinks it's overkill and unecessary, which it is, but I purposely make him ride in it everywhere we go when he's out.... just because I think it irks him a little.... and because he thinks his little Saturn car is better with it's 30mpg crap!!!!

I wish you would keep in mind its not a 7.3L and a 4R100. The first 2 gears in these trucks are LOWER then the 1st gear in a 4R100. So if you like to move 15 feet and be in 3rd gear then more power to ya. 4.30s would be the highest I would put in anything.

4.56s and 38s is virtually same as a stock trucks ratio, as is 4.88 with 40-41s. the reason i dont like it shorter is that the 6.0 has lag off the line, whereas the 7.3 doesnt. towing heavy, the lag kills you, and it was horrendous with 38s and 3.73s.

33s you want 3.73s, what comes factory. you would gain on your low speed mpg, but your high speed would go to shit. youd prolly make less torque because theres less load on the motor and you wont pull the boost...

a 6.0 makes ZERO power before the turbo lights. the 7.3 drives like a gas truck off the line. you know that yourself. keeping the gear ratio right minimizes the time before the turbo lights, making it easier to drive and tow with. once the turbo lights though, theres no comparison between the 7.3 and 6.0. i would never say the 7.3 is better dumbass. if i thought it was, i wouldnt have spent twice as much to get a 6.0...:upyours:

i dont wanna doubt you doug...but my truck stocked, chipped, whatever has a lot of lag! the only difference in it chipped is after it boost up, the tires break loose into 2nd gear.

Yeah i've got 4.10s on 33s. Which is what those alcoas on 19.5s measure. Mikey I know what you are talking about. If you stand on the pedal which im sure you do then you are right, the truck does go nowhere. Roll on the throttle, it works better. Mikey keep in mind that you are feeding larger tires a smaller and smaller pinion every time you go to a higher number gear. Then multiply that by your trans ratios. Not only do i have less lag, but I move further for every gear and my powerband lasts longer across every gear. So i move further and faster than you do. So if I was you, I wouldn't race Toby on 41s. Unless you want to be embarassed.

i just dont see how anything can be different. our trans are obviously identical. the ratio from the rear end to the tires revolutions per mile is the same. the final drive ratio from the motor to what the ground sees is the same in every gear...

dude, runs great. the planetary gear and 1 way clutch diode exploded, sent metal all thru out the tranny. we replaced the torque converter with a triple disc, and all the clutches were replaced with heavy duty ones. im not sure who made the upgrade kit, but it was not suncoast. regardless, the trans shifts so much better and crisper, i cant wait to throw some serious power. i told the guy it may see 700hp, and he said bring it on! 1 year, unlimited hp warranty, im not complaining!

Mikey, you can use your calculator and confirm that overall drive ratios are the same, but smaller tires will be faster off the line. This has to do with the weight and where it is in relation to the axis of rotation.
