ISSUE:
Some 2005 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with the 6.0L diesel engine, built before 11/24/2004, may exhibit a moan/grunt noise coming from the power steering when turning the steering wheel. The condition is typically more pronounced during left hand turns. The noise may sound like it is coming the steering gear or the steering column area.
ACTION:
Replace the hydraulic booster-to-steering gear pressure line and the fluid cooler-to-steering gear return hose. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Fluid Cooler-To-Steering Gear Return Hose Removal and Installation
<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=80>NOTE:</TD><TD>THOROUGHLY CLEAN ALL DEBRIS FROM THREADS AND FITTINGS DURING DISASSEMBLY/REASSEMBLY TO PREVENT CONTAMINANTS FROM ENTERING THE SYSTEM.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Place the vehicle on a hoist, leave the gear selector in NEUTRAL. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM) Section 100-02.
Using a suitable suction device, drain the power steering fluid reservoir.
Release the cooler hose clamps and remove the return line-to-cooler hoses (Figure 1).

Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information refer to WSM Section 303-12.
Remove air cleaner assembly mounting bracket from radiator core support.
Remove upper radiator air deflector.
Remove the push pin holding left radiator air deflector.
Release the hose clamp and disconnect the power steering fluid return hose from the reservoir (Figure 2).

Disconnect the return line-to-steering gear fitting (Figure 3).

Release the power steering return line from the retainers mounted on the radiator core support and remove power steering return line (Figure 4).

Disconnect the pressure line-to-booster fitting (Figure 5).

Remove clip and line from shock tower (Figure 6). Discard clip. A new clip must be installed during installation of the new line. Select appropriate clip for 4x2 or 4x4 application.

Disconnect the pressure line-to-steering gear fitting and remove the pressure line (Figure 3).
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Refill the power steering system with clean fluid and bleed the system.
