I am about to install my new heads and such.

my question is I have been running motorcraft oil in the truck for about 50k miles.. do you think its a bad idea to switch oils?

I have no reason to switch but would like to try the valvoline..

my dad thinks this is not a good idea.

let me know.

Your truck is a machine and does not get use to a certain type of oil, fuel or car wax for that matter.
The only thing that matters is meeting the criteria set by the manufacturer as a minimum.

I would drain the ford oil and send it in for analysis then switch and send another sample when you change that oil. This will tell you which type of oil is better.:D

I sent an oil sample in of my Ford factory fill oil at 4,000 miles and the wear metals were a little high due to break in but, the Motor Craft oil is holding up extremely well!
I was completely impressed and surprised with my results.:D

You guys keep saying Valvoline is best, based on what?
Does anyone have oil analysis results with Valvoline after a 5k mile run, or does it just feel that good between your fingers when you change the oil?

I'm not saying Valvoline is bad, I'm just saying lets see some proof before you sing praise.

Lets put it this way, I ran Amsoil full synthetic 15 40 for 9000 miles then set in a sample (I think they say it's a 25,000 mile oil). When I drained off the oil for the sample it felt really nice and clean with a decent color.

When I got the results back I almost fell over! The oil was still good, but not by much! The oil was oxidized enough to cause the viscosity to be somewhere in the range of straight 55w oil (I started with 15w 40).

The wear metals were in check but the oil was failing quickly.

Duh Jay I promote Valvoline because I sell it. Valvoline pays me to promote it. And Rotella won't return my phone calls.

I base my opinion on the phone calls that I get when people call me to say my truck runs like shit in the morning and ask me what is wrong with it. I ask them what oil have they been running in it. They tell me either rotella or that they let the dealer change it 95% of the time. And a handful of people have told me they run schaefers or delo or delvac. I just see more people with problems with those two oils (rotella and ford) than any other oils combined. I have yet to get a call from someone that has been running Valvoline Premium Blue conventional or synthetic or the All Fleet Plus version and have them tell me they had 1 or 2 or 3 or 8 injectors replaced either once or multiple sets. I don't give a shit if the oil analysis told me to keep running the oil if the truck is sitting at the dealer to have the injectors replaced.

I didn't realize you were selling the stuff but, I would still like to see an analysis just for curiosity.
I will agree that Rotella is a lousy oil the synthetic isn't a real synthetic, it's a blend along with some Amsoil, Red Line and Quaker State products. The Ford oil, I have not personally had any cold start issues or otherwise. The analysis says the lead is very high and appears to be from an additive, they could possibly be putting something in there from the factory making it hold up. It would be interesting to see an analysis from a truck with bad injectors and I'm sure it would tell you there's a problem. I wonder what the oils have in common?

Returned phone calls and customer service are good points too. I also refuse to deal with ass hole vendors that expect you to beg them to take your money and I will go great lengths to tell everyone about shitty customer relations.

Im not selling the stuff. I only get it for people that live in remote areas of the country where all they can get is oil from Walmart. Sheboygan Wisconsin is a prime example of this sort of location.

how is the amsoil? I run their 2 stroke oil in my snowmobiles. in the 2 stroke market they make the best oil you can get, I was considering getting it for my diesel either that or Mobil, Mobil1.

I run the Amsoil Series 3000 stuff...no problems here, and I have the oil analyzed every time I change the oil.

What are your OCI intervals? Would you be willing to share some of your analysis reports?

The last run was over 12000 Km's, and the report was good, no need to change the oil yet. But I do change the oil and I also run the Amsoil oil filter as well.
Yes, I could attach a file or 2...

Those numbers do look pretty good as did mine. Judging from the high phosphorus, calcium and zinc you must put an additive in your oil.

I noticed they don't show you the oxidation level of the oil on those reports. The oxidation is related to the vis, the higher the vis., the worse the oxidation is.

The report I had with Amsoil showed my oxidation was getting too high.
The upper limit for a powerstroke is 25 and I was at 25.1 after 9,000 miles

I tried to make an attachment of the report but, it keeps scrambling I will try a few more times.

Here is a doc of limits for the Powerstroke, it was supposedly created with a NavStar engineer.

I can't figure out how to make a link from my analysis account to here and the fucken' frog ain't answering his phone.

If you pm me your email I will forward it to you and compare it to the limit sheet I attached above.

Unless someone can walk me through the process of making a link:D :o

Abrannan19,
The reason your dad says not to change oil brands is because he is old. Like me, except I'm older.
Back in the late 50's and very early '60's, the reason for brand loyalty was based on a) oil detergents, and b) the fact that oil back then had a paraffin component in it (I don't understand 1950's oil additive rationale), I just know I saw plenty of oil pans with sludge inches thick on the bottom of lots of straight-six oil pans. My dad and other back yard mechanics concluded this was from changing oil brands. I don't know this to be fact, as other facts were in question (I don't shave my palms and I still have good stereo vision).

The short answer to you would be: make the switch, and see if the dollar per mile per maintenance/reliability interval is worth the move to synthetic.
I use Delo-400 because it advertises all the fine attributes of the Blue Stuff.

I also use an OilGuard bypass filtering system, and only keep my "dino" oil in the pan 10K miles (even with UOA).

Like they say ... life's a bitch, then you die ... or life's a bitch, then you marry one ...

Don't knock it, I have heard it's similar to Mobil 1 for the gas rated stuff. I'm not sure about the diesel stuff.

My dad runs the Walmart synthetic in his gasser and goes 10,000 miles. He doesn't care to push it past that.

He almost has 200,000 miles on it now and has been doing this since it was new in 98' and still on the original motor/trans with no issues except usual things like belts, hoses and tune ups.
