View Full Version : Towing 14-18k with a tune??

I'm looking at getting a gooseneck trailer for my 07 F-350.....either a 14k-18k model (most likely 14k).

Anyways, is there any issue running a "Tow Tune" while towing in that weight range?

Of course, I'll have an exhaust, gauges and I'm guessing I'll need a bigger intake as well...........but anything else mod wise that I would need to safely run a tune at that weight??

How good is the stock intake for air flow?

Gonna wait till I have more miles on the truck till I do anything, only have 4200 miles on it now.

I should have around 5500 miles before i get in Miami on Tuesday to pick up our new boat. The boat and trailer weigh in between 13000 to 14000 together. I will be towing with Dougs tow tune so we will see how it does. Im pretty curious to see how it pulls. But im also running a dually to a srw.

Dougs tow tunes are the best. The stock intake is fine but a Airaid will help with the EGT's. You can also do the Zoodad mod to help out as well.

You shouldn't have any issues towing that weight Dan. Make sure you get the aggressive tow haul mode though. The stock air intake will provide enough flow.

Foster,

Cool, let me know how it does.

Side question: How do you like the Alpine with the BlackBird docked to it??

I've towed 10k (off of the reciever hitch) plenty of times and it does quite well. I've heard that the gooseneck tows much better though.....

The cargo alone here weighs well over 15000 pounds.

Toby,

I didn't think so, but I also read Viv post up that they don't recommend any tune if towing over 8500lbs.
Hell, 8500 lbs isn't much, IMO.
I need another skid steer either this year or next year.....and the one I want ways over 9000lbs itself, add on the multiple buckets, pallet forks, transport chains, binders, etc..... plus the trailer and I'll easily be close to 14k

I may ditch the stock intake at some point anyway......but I thought that they flowed okay and I'm good at changing them in less than 5minutes now.

Damn Toby....that's a lot of shit. What brand of trailer is that? How do you like it?

I need one that the center of the two ramps levels out as well to use the full length of the trailer (mainly for plants).

I have no idea what Vivs reasoning is behind the low weight towing. It maybe the legality question behind it. Eric has also told his tow tune can go up to factory pulling capabilities. Ask Doug what a guy named Casey in this area pulls as far as weight.

The trailer is an H@H trailer. It is HEAVY....Again HEAVY. We had the axles moved forward to to help eliminate some of the tongue weight. When I go into a tight turn, It looks like the tires are about to come off the wheel. LOL. It is the first goosenech I ever pulled with. It is great on long trips and it is way better than a bumper pull.

I think around 7500 bucks. Look at what goes into them though. There fully loaded top quality trailers. Call them up and ask for the Ebay specials.

Dan, most trailer companys will build a custom trailer if they need too. Sometimes it cost more sometimes it doesnt.

Nope. People buy trailers looking at what they need NOW. Hell, I always buy a trailer more than what I need because there will be someday I will need a bigger trailer. Give yourself some room to grow Dan.

I figured a 14k would do it....a 16k would give me some room, or a 18k would definately give me some room.

I guess I'll look at the 20ks when it comes time to buy one.

We've got some big planting jobs, some decent brick jobs, a nice brick driveway, a built in Weber BBQ with side burner and fridge, outdoor fireplace, steps, pillars etc... to do so they should help get us the coin for the skid steer and the trailer :D

Light Stellar Blue is the color....truck was originally white:

http://www.truckblog.com/gallery/DCSpecial/28431.jpg

Built front and rear modded bumpers for it, tinted the clearance lenses, traded in the tires on some 325/60R18 Silent Armor Pro Grades, paint, Husky floor mats, Wet Okole Seat Covers, PIAA Back Up Lamps, PIAA 520s in the front bumper, Limo Tint on the rear windows now, etc.....

Yeah, occasionally, I have to toss some of the other attachments in one of the dump trucks if I go places where I need more than one bucket and the forks.

Dan,

The Alpine with the blackbird is the shit. I love it. I added XM, a backup camera and ipod hookup. I mounted the docking station in the floor on the center hump. Im really glad i went with alpine. The new w205 where the blackbird docks behind the face is gonna be out this summer. The headunit is still the same.

I tried calling you but you never would answer the damn phone. No big deal i was just wanting your opinion on powdercoating our boat trailer wheels.

Over the weekend I borrowed a friends 14' dump trailer which was 3500 lbs empty and hauled 10 ton of #1 stone, thats about 24,000 lbs! I did put the truck back to stock though, didnt want to take any chances hauling that kind of weight. Truck went pretty good for power, although the rear springs were flat. It looked like I was pulling a weelie.

towing with a tune is completely dependent on how hot the tune is. there is no problem towing with any tune, just use basic procedures and watch your EGTs. If the tunes too hot, you'll have trouble keeping in the pedal pulling the weight and keeping the EGT's down. I have a "Hi-Power" tune from Tadd that's a middle of the road power builder, more of a mild street but runs good and I can tow all day long with it. I don't think a Looney or Extreme tune would be towable.

Hope this makes sense. Just hook up and try it. If it's too hot, then pull over and swap tunes and try it again. Eventually, you'll find a tune that has decent power you can tow with and you can keep it as a standby tune for towing.

Exactly, I like pulling with Doug's street tune tweaked for towing.
I pull 10 to 13,000 every single day. My last truck had 30,000 combined miles pulling with the tow file we hashed out, and at least 15,000 pulling with the tweaked street file.

On a related note, I was looking at Goosnecks today........$250/year to plate a 14k trailer, and $700/year to plate a 20k trailer. Looks like it'll most likely be the 14k.........although I would like the 20k :D

Probably a 40hp bump in power. Its not going to win you any races, but it will pull nicely.

Yeah, we have farm tags available as well.....but I believe that there are restrictions with them..

Doug,
Gotcha. That's what I was thinking it was probably a 40-60hp boost. I know on my 7.3 the 50hp setting makes a noticeable difference to how it pulls.
