well i've done all the simple mods for power and now it's time to start with the expensive stuff...but before i start adding big power i want to make sure my transmission can hold it...my mechanic told me if i got a good torque converter then he could make my stock tranny hold plenty of power...who should i go with?? i have a 04 6.0l

^^ sounds like you've been screwed by them or something
HEEEEEEELL no, i wouldnt buy anything from him if you paid me. never have either - all the convincing i needed was the first pictures of the so called 'upgraded' IC he had.
i do know someone whos been less than thrilled with something they've purchased from him tho.

yeah ive heard alot also , think he was banned as a vendor on another site. i do know someone who had them do alot to his truck. Injectors, turbo, studs, egr delete and a few other things. hes happy as can be.
well - youve always gotta have one or two advocates to champion you to the proletarian masses i suppose

Last I heard John Wood got out of the 5r110 stuff. He was tired of building a transmission and then people complaining about the shifting when it wasn't tuned correctly. So he went back to 4r100 stuff. How much power do you want to throw at the 5r110?

from what i hear part of the problem with getting it tuned was him getting back to his customers

That wasn't the problem. He would build the transmission. Someone else would tune it, and he would get blamed for the way it shifts. The trans is electronic. It shifts how its tuned. But on a side note. If the engine is doing one thing and you are telling the trans to do something else, they don't play well together.
well ill say i know atleast one person who tried multiple times to get him to write a tune, and was never able to get him to do so.
im told his service for local customers was always top notch - but if youre not local, or willing to drive there then not so much.
i will say im only basing this on about 4-5 accounts tho so its possible those people could have just had a poor experience

I appreciate all the posts above, but the OP needs to educate his mechanic. His mechanic is pushing for a new TC, and unless you are going to huge power, the stock TC is fine (at least 500RWHP). The trans is where you need to focus as well as getting a stronger input shaft. Suncoast, John Wood and ATS all make decent kits, but I'd find someone with some experience; your guy doesn't sound like he's done this before based on his directives.

When I contacted John about building a trans he told me if I could get the truck to his shop so he can tune it after he builds it a full warranty with unlimited mods is included. If he just had to ship a built trans no warranty. He also stopped selling SCT's from what he told me. Only people who bought from him originally will continue to get tunes and support. His exact words were "Im a trans shop, tow it in and I will fix whatever is in it". I got my sct from him and his tunes were really good but he said he just can't keep up with people wanting updates and changing parts.

That is what I was getting at. If its in front of him he will do it. He doesn't like to do the trans and have others put their fingers in the tuning. The 4r100 stuff i was told about was because its more of a mechanical trans than an electronic one.

Speaking of Transmissions, I think is about to take a shit. I punched the go pedal today and the thing just revved up but didn't go anywhere. It felt like it was in neutral.
