View Full Version : Ordering new shift solenoids today..Have a quick ?

I have been having some delay in the D-R and R-D shift engagement and a little delay/shudder when the truck shifts into high gear. I have the problem stock or tuned, but it's much worse with a file. The truck shifts fine when moving, but the mentioned delay is a bitch.
Doug or anyone else done a solenoid swap? I would like to have some kind of idea what I'm up against before I start taking stuff apart.
Other than dropping the pan, what else needs to be removed to change the solenoids?
Do I just change the line pressure and direct drive solenoids or are there others?
Are the solenoids the same or are there separate solenoids for each function?
Is the trans pan gasket reusable?
Should I go with stock Ford solenoids or is there something better?
Any tips would be great
Thanks

the pan gasket is reusable, the solenoids i have replaced came as a set,you replaced the hole solenoid pack. might as weal change the filter when your in there.

So is it as simple as dropping the pan and the solenoids are right there or do I need to remove other stuff to get to them?
Filter must be an easy swap?

you can change just one solenoid try this
drain the fluid and remove pan, remove the filter by pulling it straight down.
look at the filter top to make sure the seal came off with the filter,if not it is inside the fluid bore,if inside the fluid bore carfully remove the seal dont scrach the bore.
the seal is orange in color. now you should see the main valve body with the solenoids and wires. disconnect the affected shift solenoid electrical connector then remove the E clip then the solenoid. the small long end of the soleniod will go threw the valve body,at the end you will see the E clip to remove it. you may have to remove some soleniod body bolts and wire loom in order to remove the affected solenoid.
all the solenoids can be changed in the tranny except the line pressure solenoid.
i dont think the solenoids are marked so you will need to know witch one to change??? like i said i changed all of them. hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, I think I'm going to let the dealer do it :hehe:

Sucks cuz I have taken my truck back to the dealer complaining about the shift delay twice since the reverse planet recall was done. The last time I brought it in I still had 6 months of warranty left but the service rep told me its normal and not to worry.
Now my warranty has timed out by three months but the truck has only 28000 miles on it and it has gotten worse.
I'm not real happy about this :hehe:

What the hell....drive that thing. Mine has 78000 miles on it.

I have a company vehicle for 1 full week every month so my truck sits about 3 months a year :)
I just got back from making an appt at the dealer. I will have to pay for the diagnostic stuff myself, but after that, once they find the true problem, they will work with me to fix it.
If its going to need a rebuild, I'm going with either a JW or Suncoast transmission.

if they trace it to the powertrain then your 100 k will cover all but 100 buxs
and you may be able to get back most of your diagnostics fees
if my baby sits more than a week, its terrible, she flat pisses and moans for miles,
hope it gets worked out fer you

did you get this done yet? My truck is doing the same thing.

It's at Miller right now. They say the transmission range sensor is bad. Been waiting for two days for part to come in.

and you got that planetary recall done? Were you having issues, or did you just take it in? I'm wondering if you need to be under the 3/36 warranty to get that done. I was thinking about having them flush the trans, and do that recall if it's free.

Eric,
The recall was done about 2 years ago. I wasn't having any issues with the way the truck shifted until AFTER the recall was done. When I got the truck back I noticed that it shifted differently, and I had a shift delay when going from R-D or D-R. I took it back a while later and was told by the folks at Miller Ford that it was normal. At this time the truck was about a year old and had less than 10,000 miles on it.
I drove it for a while longer and it never got better or worse. In Dec 2006 I brought it back since my warranty was about to time out, and again I was told it was normal. Now the truck has 28,000 miles on it and the warranty has timed out by about 4 months and Miller Ford admits that there is infact a problem, so I make an appointment to have it looked at and they tell me it was 2 qts low on fluid. They add two qts and charge me one hr. labor to add the fluid, for a total cost of $104.70 but they cant tell me where the fluid went.
I had checked the fluid level before I dropped it off and the dipstick was at the full mark. IMO the two qts. low story was just not true, and by the time I got home it was already acting up again.
They agreed to look at it again, this time with their eyes open, and find a bad TR sensor.
Not sure how they would handle the recall with you. If its a recall they should do the work regardless of warranty status but I don't know.

They overhauled it with parts with the same part number. DUH it can and will happen again. The TR is digital. Might need an internal harness. The TR tells it when you have applied manual gears or that its in park or neutral to start the truck. So if it knows its in R. And it takes 1 1000, 2 1000 and then BLAM into gear I would look elsewhere.

Seriously? Why do you say that they used the same parts?
Now I'm getting worried since this job isn't a warranty job. Dealer said once they found the problem they would most likely be able to cover between 20-50%
No way I want to pay someone to throw parts at my truck in an attempt to fix it. I could do that shit
Did they even drop the pan to diagnose a TR problem?
What you describe above about the delay is exactly it! Plus, sometimes it feels like it engages then diesngages then engages and is fine.
If this doesn't fix the problem I think I would be better off giving my money to Suncoast

Suncoast parts dont replace a rear planet that is comming apart. If there was any metal in the pan it found its way to the cooler and probably back to the solenoid body. When a dealer ship fixes a trans they order hard parts. If the part number on the planetary set wasnt updated then it wasn't changed. So you are replacing parts with the same shit that will come apart again. They also were pulling 04 transmissions from the assembly line for swap units. Guess what parts were inside those transmissions. The same shit. The real fix was the 05 units and the reflash to make them work properly.

TR is digital. They probably looked at it with an ids. They selected R. And didn't see it confirm R right away. So they go for the TR.

I had the reverse recall done on Jan. 5, 2005 but they didnt swap out the transmission, OAISIS says "TECHNICIAN STATES DIAGNOSE AND REPLACE PLANETARY PER TSB AND REBUILD AND FLUSH TRANS"
Sounds like I'm fucked :hehe:

Is the TR the first place to start when trying to diagnose a problem? Is there any way to test it and see if its bad or is an item you just replace?

It wasn't the TR sensor :banging:
I was told that once the put the new TR sensor in the truck threw a bunch more codes so they had to call the Ford hot line to get help

I was told that they found some code in the pcm for a communication loss so they assumed it was the TR sensor. When they installed the new TR sensor they were able to clear that code, but they then got a few more, what ever that means.
I have no clue what the fuck is going on right now I don't want to start trouble because the Service Mgr. said they are going to help me out with the cost. I hate to start making things ugly before I see the bill.
They have had the truck since monday and I still don't have it back, so that is starting to suck for sure

EXACTLY what my truck has been doing lately. Like you stated below, if it's doing the 1 1000 2 1000 delay you would recommend replacing the fucking internal harness? Lets say it wasn't the fucking internal harness....what would you then suspect doug?
