View Full Version : Truck going in for repairs

I called my dealer about taking a look at my truck for a couple of concerns I have. I mentioned my truck has the tea kettle whistle and has a miss for the first few minutes of driving. The service guy told me they would put me in line and it would be about a month to a month in a half before they can look at it. He said they would check the degas bottle for exhaust gases but he pretty much felt like it would need headgaskets from what I told him. I asked if I supplied studs would they install them. He said thats not a ford approved repair, but with that said they would charge me a couple hours of labor to install if I supplied the studs.
Do you think I'd be pressing my luck if I asked them to do an egr delete also?

I asked my dealership when i took my truck in and the tech welded the cooler shut for me so i don't think it would hurt to ask the worse he could say is no.

My only concern is if they figure out that I've modded my truck. I don't want to give them too many clues. I already have the tuner, exhaust, gauges, CAI and DJ's diesel performance license plate working against me. lol
I'm looking at buying arp's, but also have read up on the H11's. Does anyone have an opinion either way. Also is Doug still selling arps for $700 a set or has the price went up?

It's been over a year but i bought my ARP's for 500 bucks i thought. Yea i see what you mean that would fuckin suck if they voided your warranty. When my truck went in when my gaskets were blown the bill came out to almost 10 grand after they were done i had a bad turbo, oil cooler, etc etc.

ARP's are all you will need. Just make sure to take the heads from the Ford guys to a good machine shop to make sure they are FLAT! Ford's way of saying the are flat is putting a straight edge on it and seeing if it is "in spec." That's horseshit IMO. Get them flat and then follow the ARP instructions and you should have no problems.
I will say that mine hasn't puked since Ford replaced my blown TTY bolts with the "new and improved" bolts. Not sure what if anything was changed with them but I haven't puked a drop since.
Doug's studs are $700 with a $300 core charge only when you buy the $1200 manifold.

Yea the tech that did mine put new heads on it he told me most of the time he don't fuck with makin sure the old ones are within tolerance he just gets new ones so he knows they are good.

You have to put a .002 feeler gauge under the straight edge to check the clearance. How is that bullshit?

It's not bullshit. It is just above the capability of 99% of the Ford techs out there.

"Feeling" a 0.002" tolerance under a straight edge is bullshit and you are correct, it's something that 99% of all people would fail at not just Ford techs.
I haven't talked to a single machinist that hasn't laughed at the assertion that you can check 0.002" tolerance with a straight edge and feeler gauge with any accuracy.

So you want them sent out to a machine shop and have a dial indicator run over them?

I know this has been discussed before, but 0.002" is a pretty damn small variance. Seems to me that a decent gasket should be able to seal that up. I can see not being able to seal up a 1/16" gap, but 1/500 or .002".....

Honestly I have heard it is at the limit for a MLS gasket. Just read around the Benz forums in Europe. .002 is considered borderline.

That is my point. 0.002" seems to be pretty critical yet it's being measured by a method that has a +/- tolerance of 50%.

For a $40,000+ truck they should give me a fucking blowjob after taking into them for the 5th time for the same thing.
Lets not mention the 25+ vehicles we have with them. Ford Master Tech my ass. I knew it was trouble when I noticed their second diesel guy was someone I knew that dropped out of high school and went to VoTec down the street.

Funny you should mention that, because I did take it elsewhere. To three dealerships actually.
But you can't face the fact that 99.9% of ford techs are fucking retards. If only they all could read a service manual as well as you!

It has Street Looney loaded right now. I never hammered on it this morning, just normal driving. The whole drivers side is coated in coolant. It had the tea kettle whistle going most of the drive to work, so I'm thinking it may just be the degas cap but don't know.

My wife just dropped my truck off at the dealership. I talked to the guy on the phone since I'm up in CO to remind him of the problems and the studs we talked about putting in. I asked him when he thought it would be diagnosed, and he said he already knew what was wrong with it.
I'm not sure how someone can diagnose a truck without at least opening the hood or starting the truck. I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not.:violin:
Next up are the trans upgrades and the coolant filter, that is if Doug would ever send my parts to me.:hate:

Well, I finally got my truck back today. They installed new head gaskets, egr cooler, oil cooler, misc gaskets, changed the STC fitting due to a leak they found, and installed my arp's. Total cost was $234 for the labor to install the studs and $100 deductable.
