What is the proper way to flush the cooling system?

There is a block drain plug that is accessible on the drivers side of the block. There is a radiator drain. Pull both of those. Stick a hose in the bottle and fire it up. When it's all coming out clear. Shut it off and turn off the hose. Let it all drain out. Put the plugs back in. Refill.

If there is oil in the system...

Doug does the 6.0 not have a block plug on the passenger side or is it blocked by the starter? I'm pretty sure I remember a plug on each side when we had my brother's motor out of the truck.

There is a plug on the right side. But like you said. It's blocked by the starter.

Stick a hose in the degas bottle? How much coolant do I need and do I need to flush it with distilled water?

Going to need 2 gallons. Then you can put 2 gallons of water with it.
