View Full Version : Lets talk fuel additives in the 6.0

until recently I have never put any cleaning additive or centaine booster in my 6.0.

I was having a few issues that I figured could be cleared up with a cleaner.
I went looking for Stanodyne and could not find it anywhere, so I went to the Ford dealer and bought their diesel additive which I believe is Stanodyne relabeled.

I did not notice any improvement in fuel mileage or idle quality or power ect. in fact, I was disappointed with it.

What are you guys using, where do you get it, how often do you add it and what are the results, ie. smoother idle improved mpg ect.

I have put the powerservice in the tank a few times. I don't think there will be a drastic change to performance from a simple fuel additive, but just going by the numbers, Ford wants at least a level 40 for the cetane. The fuel stations that say Premium Diesel has a cetane of like 50. The higher the cetane the faster the fuel explodes.

after our last bout with WATER and sand i have been running powerservice at each fillup, this has been going on for 2 months now,
performance wise ???, but no WIF and the truck is queiter at idle speeds and smoother.
i drained just under a gallon of water and sand from my tank , and several fuel filters and many many key on drain key drain the hfcm to get it all purged, funny thing is i bought my fuel from teh same place since truck was new, they bawked at the junk i got from them, so now we go elsewhere and i pull a sample in a pickle jar before it goes in the tank.

I was thinking that I wasn't alone! LOL We all hear so many glory stories about guys that put it in every tank without religiously because of how well it works.

I do agree that every so often a cleaner should be ran through for maintenance reasons.

I wonder if just centane booster would improve the economy and how much?
We should try different additives and make a chart of some sort to mark the results to see if different companies have different out comes and if they are even cost effective in raising fuel economy in our 6.0s.

My tank is on E now and I may pick something up today to give it a shot.

Like Doug said in a earlier post, the fuel quality is not what it used to be and with the intro of ULSD additives may help a little.

end of last summer we had some serious sand and quality issues
that was the first of a long ordeal to clean it up
station basically blew me off
2nd time they changed filters but refused to pay for mine
3rd time i turned em in the department of revenue for alabama,

now we go to a place that sells equally as high quantity

fuel filters arent cheap and i changed mine out on the raod a few times from the first place

took me till late may to get it all finally cleaned up

Working at the dealer and dropping tanks we have found all sorts of weird things in the tanks. You guys are not alone.

I run powerservice diesel kleen (grey bottle) In every tank...now it's not just about increasing the economy...I do see a .5mpg highway drop when I forget it..and my injectors are also noiseyer without it.. it lubricates your injectors and pump...which ulsd will do even less for.....it also helps clean up your exhaust which in turn helps prevent sooting the turbo and egr up at idle....so consider those things too....probably more things Im forgetting.....

i heard but not confirmed that the additive thats cheap and works very well and is being added into the ulsd fuel is BIO :)

I just put in a bottle of the gray stuff, I looked at the white bottle and could not tell the difference.. What is the difference?

It was the same color as the Ford stuff and smelled exactly the same but the amount they tell you to add is much higher than the Ford additive.

Power Service calls for 16oz to treat up to 34 gallons and the Ford bottle calls for 4 oz for a similar amount of fuel.. Bang for the buck, if the Ford additive really works, it lasts way longer.

My first observation with the Power Service.
I appear to have picked up 1 mpg while pulling on the over head lie 'o' meter, it stayed solid in the high 11s low 12s.
On the way home without the trailer, I got worse than normal high 18s on the lie 'O' meter, I noticed a head wind though and this may explain the 1mpg increase on the way there this morning.

White Bottle is for winter months. Grey Bottle is for regular. The white bottle is less concentrated for superior anti-gel.

IMHO, I believe the fuel of today has more than enough anti-gel agents in it because, my truck lives outside and will start after sitting out all night in -30 with the wind chill of -60. Some kid unplugged my truck once at a similar temperature and it started without the aid of the block heater!

Unless you live in the arctic where it gets really cold, I don't think you need anti-gel additive. JMO
